On golf courses, golfers enjoy the beauty of a well-maintained environment with rich flora and fauna. Occasionally, however, animal visitors such as geese disrupt the golfing experience, particularly through their droppings, which cause pollution in the surrounding areas.

Instead of hunting the animals, the use of BirdAlert mobile offers an effective way to deter geese and crows. This self-contained system is easy to use and, thanks to its pneumatic tires, suitable for any terrain without causing damage. The Federal Agency for Nature Conservation is funding the "GolfBiodivers" project with €2.5 million to support the protection of biodiversity on golf courses. Golf courses and the consideration of biodiversity in suitable areas can coexist harmoniously, bringing nature conservation and sport together by enhancing the vegetation along the edges of the course.

BirdAlert mobile in use

When BirdAlert 2.0 detects one of the harmful bird species, it immediately starts a program with the appropriate panic calls, specifically targeting that species. The system uses AI and self-optimizing algorithms, allowing BirdAlert to continuously adapt to the specific situation. This increases the effectiveness of the bird deterrent. To scare the birds away as they approach, the microphone and speaker are mounted at the very top of the mast. By occasionally repositioning the BirdAlert mobile unit, the affected areas can be effectively protected.

Damage caused by flocks of crows

Crows also cause considerable damage on many golf courses, as they search for grubs or nematodes in the playing areas during the spring and can cause extensive damage. Since crows often appear in large groups, this requires additional work for the greenkeepers to make the affected areas playable again.

Pollution by geese

In recent years, Canada geese, Egyptian geese, and greylag geese have become increasingly common on golf courses. Egyptian geese have established themselves as invasive species on these courses and are reproducing rapidly, posing a threat to native birdlife. They aggressively drive other waterfowl and ground-nesting birds out of their territory. A growing goose population leads to significant problems on fairways and greens due to droppings and free-roaming geese.
