Sound pressure system keeps birds away from the Elbphilharmonie plaza
The Elbphilharmonie is a concert hall in Hamburg, completed in November 2016.
It was planned with the aim of creating a new landmark for the city and a "cultural monument for everyone." The 110-meter-high building in the HafenCity district is located on the right bank of the Norderelbe river at the tip of the Großer Grasbrook peninsula, between the mouths of the Sandtorhafen and Grasbrookhafen harbor basins.
At a height of 37 meters, between the brick base and the glass superstructure, lies a publicly accessible square: the Plaza.
It serves as the entrance area to the concert hall foyer and the hotel. The Plaza is accessible via an approximately 80-meter-long and 21-meter-high escalator, known as "the Tube," as well as a second, shorter escalator. A special feature of the Plaza is an exterior walkway that encircles the entire building. From here, there is a wonderful view of the Norderelbe river, the harbor, HafenCity, and the city center. The walkway also offers glimpses into the various levels of the concert foyer.
After winning the tender for pigeon and seagull protection on the plaza level of the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, we began detailed planning in 2013 and started installing the devices in the ceiling in 2016.
We protect the entire plaza from bird droppings 24/7 with 22 Ornigard devices integrated into the plaza ceiling. The system is regularly maintained and functions reliably.
Even before its official opening, the Elbphilharmonie Plaza was attracting up to 17,000 visitors daily from November 2016 onwards. By the end of February 2017, less than four months after its opening, the Elbphilharmonie Plaza had already welcomed its millionth visitor. The 10 million visitor mark was reached in early June 2019.
The spectacular arched openings offer views of the harbor and city center. They, too, are individually designed
equipped with two sound pressure devices.
